Trade Publications...

It is of the utmost importance that you keep a pulse on your industry at all times, as "knowledge is power." The best way to do this is to read trade publications. In addition to the Wall Street Journal, many Investment Bankers read titles such as American Banker, The Bond Buyer and Financial Planning. In New York City, real estate professionals read The Real Deal. Chief Information Officers read CIO Magazine. Doctors read The New England Journal of Medicine, and so on and so forth.

By keeping a pulse on your industry, you'll be ahead of the curve as opportunity emerges in niche areas. Furthermore, you'll be able to speak intelligently about the minutiae of your craft; very impressive (and attractive) to potential employers. Find a trade publication, subscribe to it, and start reading and internalizing!
