Paradigm Shift: Horizontal Career Path...

Society has ingrained in our brain the need to climb the vertical career ladder. In fact, simply reference the term, "move your way up in the world," and you'll know what I'm talking about. I propose a paradigm shift, which focuses not on the heirarchy of an organization (peers, subordinates, and superiors), rather it focuses on being the best damn employee WHERE YOU ARE...period. Forget titles, salary ranges, and the like. Become a jack-of-all-trades. Someone who wears many hats. All this starts with your own desire to learn more. Use the Internet. Take a lunch break at Barnes & Noble and read. Knowledge acquisition, and application of that new knowledge, will make you a star in the workplace.

The funny thing is, the less you focus on climbing the corporate ladder, the quicker you'll be escorted up the ladder. Seriously. And remember, climbing the ladder typically means more accountability, more stress, and less time for family. I wouldn't trade the aforementioned for a $15K salary hike. It's simply not worth it. Focus on mastery of the PRESENT, and your success will take its course. I promise.

Have you taken advantage of the present moment?
